Preservation and education are important goals of the National Veterans Network. The NVN is holding a national video contest for high school students that encourages them to study the stories of Japanese American World War II soldiers.
The competition seeks videos from individual students that shares the impact of a Japanese American Nisei Soldier story on their personal lives.
The contest is open to high school students in the U.S. The NVN will accept submissions thru Dec. 31, 2019. Students are to select the story of a Nisei soldier, either from the Nisei Soldier Congressional Gold Medal Smithsonian Digital Exhibition (http://cgm.smithsonianapa.org/index.html) or a relative who is a Japanese American WWII veteran. The student is then asked to create a video to describe the impact of the soldier’s story on their life today.
The video should incorporate one more of the following Army values: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. The video should be no more than three to four minutes in length.
There will be a committee of judges that will determine the winner of the contest. Judging criteria includes: how well the video reflects the value of the Nisei soldiers, its relevance to today and historical accuracy.
The winner of the national contest will be invited to Washington, D.C., to visit the National Museum of the United States Army, where he/she will be able to meet veterans, their families and see the exhibits about the WWII Nisei soldiers. The winner will also receive a prize package of $300 and travel accommodations.
